These photo’s were for me to remember this significant time in our lives, after having an elective double mastectomy only a month before. I wanted these pictures to be in a personal setting, with our adorable rescue kittens, Bentley and Madison.
The surgery was a preventative measure to reduce my risk of breast cancer from 85% to 2%, as I carry the breast cancer gene, passed from my dad, who was diagnosed four years ago.
I thank God for His incredible grace in providing for me, for going before me and working through the prayers of so many people. For giving me my amazing husband, who played such an enormous role in making things easier for me and enabling me to be so well prepared, going into the surgery.
Kirst and Mike, thank you for allowing me into your personal space, the tender love and support you show one another is inspirational.

There is something very fresh and pure about their love. Usually we have to ask couples to look away from the camera, but not these two… they just kept looking at each other. Too sweet. Here are a few favourites.

]]>Soon it will be Carmen’s turn to walk down the aisle as she marries her sweet man Dan, and we can’t wait to photograph their wedding. Until then, here are a few photos from a little shoot we did a couple of weeks ago.
We loved getting to know them a bit and can’t wait to photograph their wedding next month. They live in Durban, but we did a quick engagement shoot for them at Pearl Valley Golf Estate, where they were visiting friends last weekend.

Nelia is also a photographer – talk about pressure! We were amazed to hear that Nelia and Savio have been together for 7 years already! Wowzers! They are getting married in December and although we are sad we can’t shoot their awesome wedding, we know they are in the amazingly capable hands of one of Cape Town’s finest photographers – our friend Annemari. Nelia and Savio, thank you for the chance to capture you on the other side of the lens, we wish you a long and blessed marriage.
We love these two. Bring on forever!
Not only is he dashing and handsome with great taste in women (have you seen Marissa), but he is also an incredibly talented drummer and percussionist.
Together with Andrew James, they are Andrew James and the Steady Tiger. I was privileged to be there when they launched their debut album, which you can listen to here.
The album also features Ariella Caira Reolon on cello (we took her wedding photos). Rad!

As people living in today’s world we are often overwhelmed by how much need there is out there. We are bombarded with statistics about poverty, hunger, crime and abuse and to be honest, sometimes we are so overwhelmed with how great the need is that the default response is to shut down. We feel that there is nothing we can do to REALLY make a difference, to even scratch the surface of the suffering, that even when we work to create change and give to a cause nothing really changes (read more about ‘compassion fatigue’ and how to overcome it here). But there IS hope. We really can make a tangible difference to people who are suffering in our world.
Our friends Gary and Courtney (awesome photographers and the loveliest people you could ever meet) recently introduced us to charitywater.org, an organisation that is transforming thousands of people’s lives through something as simple as clean water, and inspired by them, we are jumping on board too.
Water changes everything as you will see in this short video:
You see, there IS hope! Our dream is to fund a water project that will provide access to clean water for an entire village. For this we need to raise $5000 (about R36 000). This seems like a lot, but if many of people give a small amount it is totally do-able! With your help we can change the lives of a whole village! For the price of a meal at a restaurant, an item of clothing or a couple of movie tickets, you can make a dent in this amount and contribute to something HUGE.
What we love about charitywater.org is that every cent of your donation goes toward a water project (they have other sponsors that fund their admin and running costs). Also, once they have implemented our water project (this takes up to 18 months) we will get a full report, including photographs and googlemaps location showing us where and how our project has been implemented and what difference it is making.
To make it more fun, we have decided to give a free 1 hour shoot to the first 2 people who donate R1000 ($140) or more.
